As you all know, I am crazy. It's true, I have accepted it.
I believe that I can communicate with chinchillas by making certain sounds. One of my favorite sounds is the elephant sound. It tells the chins to come to the front of their cages and say hello to me. There's other noises I make, too, but it isn't necessary just yet to tell you all about them!
The way you do it is extend your top lip as far below your bottom lip, squeeze it a bit and blow. The harder you blow the louder the sound you will make. It's sort of like the noise an elephant makes...a little high pitched. The chins love it. They popcorn around the cage and then come to the front to talk to me.
My theory is that it has frequencies similar to those in the squeaks they make to each other to call each other over or the mommy noise that the moms make to talk to their little ones. My noise is MUCH louder so everyone hears it. It sounds like an elephant or trumpet in my head!
Anyone else have noises they make for their chins?

Have I ever made that noise on the phone for you? LOL I thought I've told everyone about how they love that sound.
I spent an hour trying to elephant noise the Scooby Doo song tonight.

LOL...I just make a clicking sound to get their attention. The elephant noise sounds much more entertaining, but my family already thinks I'm nuts as is. I don't need to give them another reason to put me away. My immediate family is used to me, but I can't put my conversations with the critters on hold while the extended family is over. I squeek at the cat, have conversations with and growl at the dogs, and click and talk to the chins. I'm sure they think I'm out of my mind as it is without elephant sounds.
OT: I think my theme song should be that really annoying old "They're coming to take me away, ha ha" song. As long as the nice young men are cute...
They're coming to take me away ho ho hee hee ha haaa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I'll be happy to see those nice young men
In their clean white coats
And they're coming to take me away ha haaa
And they're coming to take me away
To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket weavers who sit and smile and twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they're coming to take me away ha haaa!

I haven't tried making the elephant sound but catch myself making the clicking sound all the time to my critters. I guess you can blame the 5 Greys in my house! Chins respond though but probably because they know treats are coming!

Something I love about this forum is how we can have fun!
And also that some of us can seem so crazy, but yet no one on here sees it as an issue! lol
Don't worry, everyone has different reasons why people think their crazy, and it usually has to do with their critters! My friends tell me I'm crazy all the time!
I think people who didn't grow up with many animals or don't have as much of a love for animals just don't understand... Most of my friends never understand how I want my dogs to be as comfortable as possible, and let them lay on the couches, and talk to all of my animals... Oh well! :)

O.K. I'm new! I saw this and thought "how the heck can a chin......." and proceeded to laugh so hard, my eyes watered and I woke up my daughter! Yes, I make that clicking sound, but I tried the other, and sounded like a woopie cushion! My chins would climb the walls!! [maybe that's what woke up my daughter] Really, biggest laugh I've had in a while! Thanks!!!

:roflmao: I tend to make clicking noises at my guys! They all know what that means. Except Cheetoe he's still to young to take part in treat time. I guess you could say I make an owl sound when I get their dustbaths ready.. its kinda like this...
WHOOOOOOOOOOO wants a dustbath.. and they all run to the front of the cages ROFL even Cheetoe.
