There was a child recently hit by a car in NYC and killed. Of course a tragedy, but his parents are now suing NYC for not maintaining street lamps where the child was struck. Now here's the catch-the child was 6 years old, it was 8pm and he was alone, riding his bike on a busy street to his friends house. The parents knew where he was and what he was doing. Do you think that the parents should be held responsible, or NYC?

I am sorry, I would say the parents are responsible. No way should a 6 year old be out riding his bike or anything else after dark. Its just not safe.

I think the parents should be held responsible for this as a 6 year old child should definantly never be left alone at any time! :(

Definetly the parents. No 6 year old should be out unattended after dark, nor should they be left outside at all unsupervised! Too many weirdos, murderers, kidnappers, freaks out there for one thing, for another, 6 year olds go on instinct often and don't think before they do something.

I agree...parents responsible. I wouldn't even let my daughter cross the road to get the mail until she was 12 LOL

I agree with everyone else here!!! Dont blame the city for a fault of your own... though I do believe all streets should be well lit!

Yeah, the little kid should never have been out there unattended. Not in the dark. The parents are idiots...
However, if there was something that was not being maintained and there was an accident as a result, the city should be held responsible. If the conditions were the same and an adult was killed while walking home, the city should be held responsible. And, not just because there wasn't enough light. The city put in streetlights there. When you go forth and do something like that you are then responsible for keeping it up! (We receive no city services out here, so the county or city or state isn't responsible for anything that happens here...we have to maintain the road ourselves.)

Legally parents are responsible. 6 year olds are not to be left alone.
But, the city might also be held accountable, to a DEGREE, if it's truly a dangerous area. Should not be unreasonably safe.

My kids are 11 and 14 and I wouldn't have let them do that. It's the parents fault, they should not be letting their child at that age out at that time.... Even during the day I don't know if I'd let them go. Why do some of these parents try to place blame somehwere else for their own stupidity?
