View Full Version : Oxbow Hay

On another forum there was a thread about a lady that got a batch of timothy hay from Oxbow that was FULL of dead crickets and the hay was very dry and brittle and some tough.
Well I hadn't mentioned it but I have had the same problem with my last 9lb batch of hay. Minus the crickets.
I give it to my PD's mostly and my chins get a big bundle once a week. The chins don't care and scarf it up anyway. But my PD's do care and are hardly touch it. My pd's are very finicky eaters anyway, they don't even care for fresh veggies.
So once I realized it wasn't just me, I called Oxbow. They have been going through a severe drought and don't expect it to end anytime soon. I kinda had to push to get some kind of reimbursment, by asking myself. So they are sending me orchard hay cause its still soft and fresh. Hopefully my animals will like it.
Anyone else had this problem?

Nope, but that could be because I dont' use Oxbow hay anymore. I buy my hay from the horse guy down the street.
Square bales of Timmy/Bird's Foot mixed for a $1.00 a bale.
and straight Timmy for the same price. It's always nice and very little dust, so why spend the horrid shipping prices from Oxbow when I get good hay here for next to nothing.
With the amount of hay I use ( 6 to 10 bales a WEEK ) it would cost me a fortune to have it shipped in from Oxbow all the time.

well I would do that but I don't need that large of quantity... cause we have a feed store that sales bales.

I get bales of Timmy or Alfalfa from the feed store near me. They have to special order it though. UGH!! They only carry bermuda. I don't get quite the awesome deal as KK... but I pay $12 for alfalfa and $15 for timmy.

Just to clarify, on the original post she stated she bought 40lbs of hay, then later she posted that it was Alfalfa.

I've been using Oxbow hay since 1997 and have had no problems with anything (pellets or hay). I recently read that thread you speak of, and became mildly concerned - since I had JUST ordered a 9lb box of Timothy. Thankfully, it is fine - not dry/brittle and no bugs as usual. I must note though - I quit ordering directly from Oxbow, I have been ordering all my Oxbow products from The Ferret Store for the past year and a half, since it's more affordable for me.

Thank you. Yes I saw that it was alfalfa too, but I did have a problem with my timmy hay. I have always been pleased. Hmm... never thought about ordering from the ferret store cause the shipping is free!

Geez what a mess Misty!! I buy in very very small quantities and it is always dry and brown. I have shopped around alot, but we just do not have to many choices on the Island. Ordering would be to much quanity for me..

Misty- I heard about that problem as well.
Try AmericanPetDiners.com if you want another hay source...I believe they might be more reliable :)

Well actually Charlie, since then I have switched to APD for my chin pellets, AND my hay. We have been super pleased with it. I find it even more supple and fresher than oxbows.
